Gary Michelson’s personality "quirks"

If you just met Gary Michelson you might say he’s eccentric. If you’ve known him for any real length of time calling him eccentric would not be accurate. He has some major personality and psychological issues.

It’s true that he drives an old dark blue PT Cruiser, hasn’t bought suits in over a decade and most rooms in his home have no furniture. I can’t knock him on that as I also own an old PT Cruiser, haven’t bought formal wear in a decade and I didn’t have furniture in the extra rooms in my house when I owned a larger home. Those are just little eccentric things, not signs of psychological issues.

I will share a few personal encounters with Gary and you can form your own opinion. Genesis Awards March 2006 I was supposed to sit at Gary’s table with Kathleen Riordan. There wasn’t a seat for my boyfriend so I decided to go buy two seats at another table.

I’m walking to go get a drink by myself when I see Gary. Generally I’d show up at his house wearing jeans and a shirt because work was casual. I’m in an evening gown with makeup, jewelry, hair all done up. I walk up to Gary and say “Hi, Gary. So glad you could make it.” He looks at my chest as if he’s in shock with a weird expression on his face and says nothing. I quickly look down to make sure I’m not having a wardrobe malfunction. I’m fine. I say “so, you’re sitting at Kathleen’s table? I’ll go say hello to Dave.” He says nothing while continuing to stare. My dress was a little low cut but it wasn’t too revealing. It’s a long formal length black dress. I say “well, I guess I’ll just see you over there.” He has just been staring at my chest for 30 seconds saying nothing. I just walk away. Awkward.

I’d been spending a lot of time working on the dept website being paid by Gary. My boyfriend at the time was starting to think something may be up for me to be spending all that time. Plus my boyfriend was insecure and jealous because he was poor, not very successful, shorter than Gary and didn’t have as much hair. It really bothered him for some reason that Gary has so much hair. I wanted to introduce my boyfriend to Gary to ease these fears. I see Dave and say “are you guys at table 112?” Dave said yes. I said I was coming over to introduce my boyfriend to Gary. Dave said great.

Gary is sitting at the table without a date. I first say hello to Kathleen and chat. Then I introduce my boyfriend to Gary. I say “Gary, I’d like you to meet my boyfriend, John Doe.” Gary looks at me in a strange way as if he really dislikes me then he looks away. Then he waves my boyfriend away from him like he’s shooing a cat out the door. I look at Dave who hunches his shoulders. My boyfriend and I leave. Now I’m really glad I changed tables. I now get the third degree from my boyfriend who thinks I must be fooling around with Gary for him to shoo him away. Nothing like that ever took place ever. After dinner my boyfriend and I left and went back home. He lived with me at the time. I later asked Dave why Gary behaved that way. He said he didn’t know. That’s just Gary. This is just one example of how strange Gary can be.

My only explanation is that I was only given one ticket because they wanted me to come alone. I told Kathleen I had to bring my boyfriend. I wasn’t even sure if Gary had accepted the ticket from Kathleen. Maybe Gary didn’t have a date and they only gave me one ticket because I was supposed to be his date? I know I mentioned that I had a boyfriend a few times. I obviously can’t go to a dinner event without him and with someone else. I truly doubt I was being set up as his date though he was single at the time and they only gave me one ticket. If that were the case, Dave or someone should have informed me of the situation. I would have declined and stayed home. It still does not excuse him shooing my boyfriend away like that. That was rude.

Dr. Gary Michelson defames me and commits perjury

I worked for the City of Los Angeles as an independent contractor through a grant from the Found Animals Foundation in 2006. I was paid hourly to help Ed Boks because his webmaster went on maternity leave and never returned. No one in the Dept knew how to update the website.

Ed Boks kept making huge mistakes getting himself in trouble. Every time I would warn him but he refused to listen. Finally Ed Boks blames me for his mistakes and I get fired. Boks apologized and said he’d make it up to me by getting me another job and grant. He doesn’t.

I  kept asking him about the job and grant. Finally before the statute of limitations is up to file a legal claim, he tells me he has no job or grant for me. This was also after I refused his advances.

I found a lawyer, told him what happened, showed him all the emails. He said I should sue Ed Boks, the City, Gary Michelson and Found Animals Foundation. I stupidly said “Gary is a good guy. The Foundation is doing good things. How about we just sue the City and Ed Boks? Boks may be broke but the city is not. They can cover my damages and losses.” He filed a suit against only the City and Ed Boks even though Gary and the Foundation were the ones paying my bill. Gary is the one who told me to do whatever Ed Boks needed done. If he didn’t pay me, I would not have continued as a volunteer. I was going to quit which is why Boks asked Gary to pay me.

My attorney would put his phone on speaker phone when he spoke with the City attorney. In the first phone call the City attorney thinks my claims are fake. A week later my attorney hands over this huge stack of emails from Ed Boks. Ed Boks admitted to every inappropriate thing and mistake he ever made. He even apologized in email. The emails would embarrass the city to no end as Boks used to email drunk. I even told Boks to stop putting these things in email for fear someone would send in a state info act request. People actually did send in requests for the emails but the city attorney denied the requests making up one reason or another.

In the second call the City attorney instantly says “let’s just settle this quickly and quietly.” We go to mediation and mediate for an hour. The mediator comes back into our room and says “the defendants have a statement from your boss saying he fired you because you did a bad job.” I said “what? that’s impossible. Gary loved my work and said he didn’t fire me.” I asked “who signed that statement? Gary?” She said “I don’t think so.” I assume it must be Dave.

My attorney tells me to call Dave and see if he wrote a statement. I called Dave from mediation and he said he didn’t write a statement. All this time I’m assuming my attorney would give me a copy of all documents he and the other side filed. I also assumed he’d read their replies. He didn’t. At that time I thought the defendant must be making this up. There can’t be a statement. Gary wouldn’t write one. My attorney would have seen it.

I decided to go online and check legal filings. I find all these documents that defendants filed that I didn’t receive. Defendants made a lot of totally false statements. Then I see Gary’s sworn declaration. He stated he fired me because I did a bad job. I’m shocked. I call and leave a message, send a fax and letter. No reply. I ask Gary’s personal close friends what is the polite thing to do here. Should I add him to the lawsuit, sue him for defamation, ask for a retraction…? They tell me to ask him to retract his statement. If he doesn’t send another letter asking him to make things right. Still no answer state that I will be forced to sue. I did that, no reply.

In Gary’s statement the name of his foundation is spelled wrong so I bet the city attorney wrote it and Gary just signed it. Gary also doesn’t write anything. All he does is sign checks.

Gary does nothing to make the situation right. I had been supporting and defending him for two years and he stabbed me in the back. For the life of me I don’t know why he did this. I never said or did anything against him at that time. He asked me to write a statement for him when he said he was going to sue Loftus. I agreed to but he never sued Loftus. Loftus sued him and got a settlement.

I was going to use the same lawyer Dave used to sue Gary for defamation. I spoke with him and he said I have a great case but he doesn’t want to go after Gary again because his lawyers are ruthless. I decide that I should just lick my wounds and carry on.

Gary does not stop defaming me. He tells his employees, friends…that I defamed him. I have never defamed him. To this day Gary continues. I am now speaking out to set the record straight. Gary is not honest. He defamed me and lied in his statement. I wish I filed a motion for perjury and fraud against Gary in my case. Because of his false statement I barely got anything in my lawsuit even though I was in the right with a ton of evidence.

Working for Dr. Gary Michelson, Found Animals Foundation

When I worked for Dr. Gary Michelson people would ask me what is he really like. Is he really that strange or is he merely eccentric. I would reply and defend him. I’ll share the history of my work with him and you can judge for yourself.

I gave a presentation on the new website I made for free for LA Animal Services at the Ed Boks’ meet and greet February 2006 I think. I think video is available online. I have my presentation outline on CD. Dave Loftus and Gary Michelson were there. Dave told me later that Gary liked my presentation and wanted to hire me. I thought that was great so I said yes. I really wanted to be a part of a team that would make LA nokill. If only I could go back in time I would say “No!”

The first time I went to his house I see a pit bull in the middle of the street. I pull over to go get the dog. The dog starts to walk toward Gary’s house. Then I recognize the dog. It’s Gary’s dog. I grab the dog by the collar and lead him into Gary’s house when I notice the dog has testicles. At that moment Gary comes down the stairs wearing jeans carrying his tennis shoes. Gary says “hi, Mary” and I say in shock “Gary, your dog is not neutered.” He said he doesn’t need to be because he doesn’t mount other dogs. He puts on his shoes at the bottom of the stairs as I say “your dog was in the street.” He says “he never goes anywhere. He’s fine.”

If you are pro-animal you neuter your pets and don’t let them roam the neighborhood. The only reason not to neuter an animal is because it’s dead. I couldn’t believe how hypocritical he was. This is a huge no no in the animal world. This is akin to the CEO of MADD supporting drunk drivers.

We small talk while Dave Loftus and Mary Herro arrive. We share ideas and goals. He talks about spay and neuter as the most effective means to control population. Again, HIS DOG IS NOT NEUTERED.

As always I take detailed written notes so I don’t miss anything. I would later be very thankful for this because Gary never puts anything in writing. I also wanted to make sure I do exactly what he wants. Gary tells me he wants the foundation to show cities how to cost effectively control overpopulation. At this point Gary really thinks that pet overpopulation can easily be conquered with brains and money. He now realizes that it’s not that easy. If it were, the problem would not exist.

I clarified his request “you want me to do a report on the effectiveness of spay and neuter?” He says “yes.” I go and do my report. I was also supposed to get the name, address, phone number of all vets in California. That only took a few minutes because I made a robot to pull the data out of the state vet licensing website. I would also be in charge of making a website. I made a sample website, list of ideas…. but no one was willing to approve anything or get back to me. What’s odd is I drew up a dog collar halo to represent Gary as the logo. That’s what they are using. I don’t know if someone forwarded my website outline or what.

I’m being paid by the month. After I finished my report and made the list I ask Dave what else would he like me to do. No reply. I start offering ideas “would you like me to do this? that?” A month later Dave tells me he’s taking the foundation in a new direction, i.e. chips, kiosks, and doesn’t need my services or the services of Mary Herro. I asked Dave for my check as I haven’t been paid in the two months that I was there. He tells me to send him a bill. Being the honest person that I am I sent a bill for fewer hours than I actually worked helping the City. I didn’t think Gary would believe that I actually worked as many hours as I did. The grant part of my job was to help Ed Boks with the city website, PR… That was paid hourly.

Dave doesn’t cut me a check. I ask Karl what I should do about my check. He tells me to contact Cohen. I do and nothing happens. I then hear via Ed Boks that Gary fired Dave. FTR Gary did not fire Dave. Dave quit when Gary didn’t fulfill his part of their agreement. Gary just lied.

I finally leave my report and bill at Gary’s house. Gary calls me. He said “I told you to make a report about the effectiveness of ALL approaches to end pet overpopulation.” I stupidly look at my meeting notes and say “no, you didn’t. You just said spay and neuter.” Then silence, wrong answer. I then say “I can finish that report in one day.”

Fortunately I’ve been involved in this issue for so long that I already had that report in my head. A few of the approaches are of course spayneuter, TNR, size of shelters, returning lost pets to owners, helping owners keep their pets, fostering, licensing, bottle babies, media, PR, education, outreach….. I just needed to cite research sources.

I drop the report off at Gary’s house with my bill. He calls me and says he fired Dave. He said he really liked my report. Then I say “then why did you fire me?” He said “I didn’t fire you, Mary. Where did you hear that?” I said “Dave told me.” Then I said “if I wasn’t fired, then I’m still working for you?” He said “yes.”

Cohen finally mails me my check. There is no termination letter with my check. I think I’m still working with the foundation. Gary through Karl asks me to give him some documents, do some research and I do. I ask a few more times, was I fired or not. No answer. I finally get the hint and stop working.

Dr. Gary Michelson’s "Michelson Prize," not really a prize at all

As soon as I heard about Dr. Gary Michelson’s Prize of $75,000,000 in 2008, I submitted my entry. I’d been studying permanent and temporary animal sterilization for years. I concentrated my research on the main causes of infertility/sterility, intentional and unintentional. These drugs came from that research. These drugs already exist and have been approved by the FDA. These drugs are owned by other companies. You can legally and effectively sterilize cats and dogs right now with these drugs used off label. Off-label use of human drugs for animals is approved. In fact they already tested them on animals, i.e. rats, rabbits, cats and dogs in order to be approved for human use. We already know the dose that will make rats, bunnies, cats and dogs permanently sterile.
When Dr. Gary Michelson initially offered the Prize it was for a drug that could permanently sterilize male, female, cats and dogs with one dose. That was it. I have a copy of the initial prize offering saved.

After others and I submitted our ideas he changed things. First, he stated he owned all prize entries. That means everyone gave him their ideas for free. Second, he will only give the prize if the NEW drug can be patented so he can sell it for profit. 

He has drugs that will permanently sterilize animals but he doesn’t want to use them. If he cared about animals, sterilizing them would be the most important thing. Why does he have to own the drug and sell it for profit? I could offer a prize of $1 billion dollars to anyone who can give me a chemical which can turn dog shit into gold. Obviously the value of such a chemical would be worth more than the prize money. This is basically what Dr. Gary Michelson has done with this prize. 
Below is my entry in email format. I sent a longer more detailed one in paper format. I offered him five drugs.

I have submitted three entries which are one shot injections which cause permanent sterility in cats/dogs. They are currently FDA approved and legal to use off-label with cats/dogs. I have submitted two others which are legal to use in research. I would need to test these chemicals only to determine the amount at which they will cause permanent sterility in cats/dogs.
APPLICATION FOR MICHELSON PRIZE AND GRANT FROM FOUND ANIMALS FOUNDATION 
Single dose substance given to male and female cats and dogs to cause permanent sterilization 
1. LUPRON Lupron is a synthetic hormone. When it is administered, the body stops producing testosterone hormones in males and estrogen hormones in females. Lupron is used in the treatment of prostate cancer in men, early puberty in children, anemia (due to uterine fibroid tumors) in women and ovarian or breast cancer in women. It is generally given to humans in a series of three shots to keep a lower amount of the drug in the system so as not to cause permanent sterility. If given in a single more concentrated injection, it will cause permanent sterility. Already approved by FDA. Can currently be used off -label for animals. 
2. INDENOPYRIDINE CDB-4022
Research has been done on male mice, rats and dogs with indenopyridine. In low dosages it causes reversible sterility. In higher dosages the sterility is permanent.
3. PIPECOLINOMETHYLHYDROXYINDANE
A single oral dose of DL-6-(N–pipecolinomethyl)-5-hydroxy-indane maleate caused subnormal fertility in the male rat. Sterility ensued from the 5th week and persisted to the termination of the experiment 20 weeks after dosing. 
4. TESTOSTERONE
Testosterone injected into the neonatal female rat, and leading to sterility and ovarian malfunction, does not act at the level of the anterior pituitary, which retains the ability to function normally. It is considered that it may act upon the central nervous system to cause a disturbance of the gonadotrophin-releasing mechanism. Currently FDA approved, can be used off-label for animals.
5. DEPOPROVERA
Depoprovera causes three months of s terility in human females. Given in low dosages it causes tempor ary sterility in males. Currently used as “chemical castration.” Given in higher dosages to female and male animals causes permanent sterility. Currently FDA approved, can be used off-label for animals.
Permanent sterility was noted in research use of these already approved drugs. They were the unintended effects of drugs meant to cause temporary sterility in humans. Researchers tested higher levels of the drugs in order to find the correct dosage to cause temporary sterility in humans. More research is needed on the effect of these drugs on cats and dogs as permanent sterilants. The research could be funded by a grant from the Found Animals Foundation. After I sent in my entry Dr. Gary Michelson notified me that the drug has to be new and he has to be able to patent it and sell it for profit. A lawyer said I could have sued him for changing the rules but I passed. Lawyers who have sued him and won said he and his lawyers are unethical and ruthless.
But that’s not the end of the story, not by a long shot. After I submitted these drugs Dr. Gary Michelson sends out news June 2010 stating he’s going to be developing drugs in house. He hired researchers. He basically stated his team of researchers is going to try to knock off the drugs I gave him so he can patent and sell them. They were the exact same family of drugs, i.e. gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists. Lupron was one of the drugs in the family he was basically going to knock off. Another reason he wants a drug he can own is for his ego. He wants to be able to say “I made a drug that can permanently sterilize cats and dogs!” From his website.

From an article online, “Since January 2009, 33 grant proposals have been reviewed and seven of those have been recommended for funding for a total of $3.5 million. The three primary technologies represented by grant applications to date include: immunization against GnRH (a hormone that promotes testosterone release in males and the ovarian cycle in females), targeted delivery of cytotoxins to pituitary or gonadal cells, and essentially “turning off” genes that are required for reproduction.”

When I heard about this I contacted the makers of Lupron Abbott and sent them Dr. Gary Michelson’s press release. I told them he’s probably going to try to knock off Lupron so he can own a similar patent and sell it for profit. Their main researcher at Abbott told me they were going to add “animal sterilization” as an off-label use to their patent and label so he can’t knock it off. They already did the research on animals and know the exact amount that will cause permanent sterilization. I asked for a license so I could purchase it more affordably but they said no. They told me I can legally use the drug right now to permanently sterilize cats and dogs.
Dr. Gary Michelson dangles $75,000,000 in front of people so they will give him their ideas for free. He doesn’t award the prize to anyone. He instead takes these free ideas and develops them in house so he can own the drug and say he made it. He doesn’t even develop new drugs. He’s trying to knock off existing drugs. 
Many articles have called Dr. Gary Michelson a “patent troll.” From online articles “From all available information, (medical) doctor Michelson is a quintessential “patent troll” of the worst variety – not producing anything other than “paper patents” and extorting huge sums of money from poor large manufacturers of real goodies…
Go figure…”

He basically knocks off other people’s patents by making one tiny obvious change then he patents that. Then he can sell the patent or let people use it then sue them for patent infringement. The articles are online. This is basically how he made his money.

In the article below Dr. Gary Michelson supposedly wrote this letter. I doubt it because Dr. Gary Michelson has never written anything. I think someone else wrote it and he just signed it. I would think Dr. Gary Michelson is smart enough to know the letter makes him sound like an idiot, i.e. “our patent system is great as it is. It must therefore be reformed.” Doesn’t make any sense. His analogy about patents creating jobs is also seriously flawed, i.e. “the invention of the word processor probably replaced 19 typing positions.” Jobs were lost, not gained.

If anyone has a drug that will turn dog shit (or for that matter cat shit) into gold, I will give you the Cummins Prize of $75,000,000. I’m serious 😉

I have the original PR where Found Animals Foundation states they are doing in-house research into a Lupron-like drug. I also have print outs of the original website and prize offering besides the email I received stating that it has to be a new drug they can patent.
